The 1864 novel remains remarkably contemporary in its portrait of a society in which wealth and influence outpace wisdom and integrity in the pursuit of power.
Anthony Trollope (1815–1882) ranks among the greatest English novelists of the Victorian era. The author of 47 books, Trollope was also a full-time post office employee who disciplined himself to three hours of writing every morning. His most popular books include the Barchester novels, a satire of life among small-town clergymen, and the politically oriented Palliser novels.
