Dental implants are used routinely throughout the world to replace missing teeth. With the broadening of treatment options and an increasing number of clinicians that provide implant therapy, it is important to ensure that the treatment methods used meet the highest clinical standards. The ITI Treatment Guide series is a compendium of evidence-based implant-therapy techniques in daily practice. Written by renowned clinicians and supported by contributions from expert practitioners, the ITI Treatment Guides provide a comprehensive overview of the various indicated treatment options. The management of different clinical situations is discussed with an emphasis on sound diagnostics, evidence-based treatment concepts, and predictable treatment outcomes with minimal risk to the patient. Volume 13 of the ITI Treatment Guide series provides clinicians with the latest evidence-based information on the prevention and management of peri-implant diseases. This information is based in part on the proceedings of the 6th ITI Consensus Conference held in Amsterdam in 2018, as well as on a review of the current literature. Seventeen clinical cases presented by experienced clinicians from all over the world illustrate the diagnosis and treatment of peri-implant diseases.

Professor Lisa Heitz-Mayfield, an Adelaide graduate, obtained a Master's in periodontology (1996) and PhD (1998) from Lund University, Sweden. Her doctorate focused on periodontal and peri-implant regeneration. She received a scholarship to the Brånemark Osseointegration Centre, Sweden, and an ITI Scholarship to the University of Bern, Switzerland where she was Head of the Oral Microbiology Research Laboratory from 1999 to 2003. She was awarded the André Schroeder Research Prize in Implant Dentistry in 2002. Her positions include Adjunct Professor at the International Research Collaborative, University of Western Australia, Associate Professor at the University of Sydney, and Honorary Professor at the University of Hong Kong. She is the Chair of the ITI Research committee and Editor-in-Chief of the journal Clinical Oral Implants Research. She maintains a specialist periodontal practice in Perth. Giovanni E. Salvi received his license in dental medicine in 1988 from the medical faculty of the University of Bern, Switzerland. In 1990 he received his "Dr. med. dent" degree. Between 1992 and 1994 he was a graduate student in the Department of Periodontology and Fixed Prosthodontics at the University of Bern. From 1994 to 1997 he was a postdoctoral research associate at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC, USA. In 1998 he became a board certified periodontist. Since 1999 he is a fellow of the International Team of Implantology (ITI). In 2005 he was appointed teacher of the year in the School of Dental Medicine.
