In the third, fully revised and expanded edition of this well established textbook, the authors present new concepts, results, techniques, and the latest experiments in the field of quantum optics. They begin with the basic building blocks and concepts, before moving on to detailed procedures, and novel techniques. The focus is on metrology, communications, and quantum logic, with a special emphasis on single photon technology as well as hybrid detection. A new feature to this edition are the end-of-chapter summaries and full problems sets throughout.

Prof Hans Bachor is Professor at the Australian National University and the Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Quantum-Atom Optics. An internationally recognized scientist and educator, he leads a research program and teaches courses in quantum optics. He is a Fellow of the AIP, IOP and AOS . He won several Humboldt prizes in 1999-2002 and an ARC Federation fellow 2003-2008. In 2009 he was awarded the Australian Institute of Physics Award for Outstanding Services to Physics in Australia. Dr Tim Ralph is an Australian Research Council Professorial Fellow and Node Director and Program Manager of the Queensland Node of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computation and Communication Technology. He obtained his BSc with honours at Macquarie University, Sydney and his PhD at the Australian National University, Canberra.
