The authors include results obtained during an industrial research project on Smart Cities that was carried out in collaboration with utility companies and other academic, research, and industrial partners. Results are focused on assessing the impact of distributed generation, storage devices, electric vehicles, and smart appliances distributed to residential energy hubs. In addition, actual results on real-time control and optimal dispatch of a hybrid energy system designed for supplying power in isolated power systems are presented.
Massimo La Scala received his degree in Electrical Engineering in 1984 and his Ph.D from the University of Bari. He has conducted research activities in conjunction with Arizona State University,Washington State University, Castilla La Mancha, Waterloo Canada as visiting professor. In 2007, he received an IEEE award for “contributions to computationally efficient power system dynamic performance and simulation control. His research has focused on topics relevant to the production, transmission and distribution of electrical energy, paying particular attention to the management of environmental issues, smart grids and more recently, the infrastructure of smart cities.
