Timely and forward-looking, the first part of this book provides an in-depth overview of the design, fabrication and characterization of novel magnetic materials, covering high-throughput screening methods for the discovery of new materials as well as nanotechnology-enabled approaches for the realization of magnetic nano- and microstructures. The second part then goes on to review their for various types of memories and high-performance electronic device components. The whole is rounded off by a look at the economic aspects of magnetic materials.

Claude Chappert is a First-Class CNRS Research Director with 30 years of experience in ultrathin magnetic films and nanostructures. He heads the IEF laboratory (Institute of Fundamental Electronics) at the Université Paris-Sud (France) and is currently involved in the management of the MINERVE project which unites nine laboratories of Université Paris-Sud that run the National Nanofabrication Centre at IEF. Claude Chappert is also coordinator of the French network on "Storage/Memories/Displays" established in 2002 by the CNRS. Claudia Felser is currently director at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids in Dresden (Germany). She obtained her PhD in physical chemistry from the University of Cologne (Germany). After postdoctoral fellowships at the Max Planck Institute in Stuttgart and the CNRS in Nantes (France), she joined the University of Mainz (Germany) and became a full professor in 2003. Margrit Hanbücken is Research Director in the CNRS and director of the Competence Centre of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology of the Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur region. Margrit Hanbücken's group at CINaM-CNRS in Marseille develops new strategies for the nanofabrication and functionalization of novel templates, subsequently used in different fields going from physics and chemistry to biology and looking at fundamental aspects as well as applications. Oliver Gutfleisch is Full Professor for Functional Materials at TU Darmstadt (Germany) and scientific director at Fraunhofer IWKS. His scientific interests span from new permanent magnets for power applications to solid state energy efficient magnetic cooling, ferromagnetic shape memory alloys, magnetoelastomers for adapted damping and actuation, magnetic nanoparticles for biomedical applications, and to solid state hydrogen storage materials with a particular emphasis on tailoring structural and chemical properties on the nanoscale. Ralf B. Wehrspohn is Professor for Experimental Physics at the University Halle-Wittenberg (Germany) and Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for the Mechanics of Materials IWM. He obtained his PhD in physics jointly from the University of Oldenburg (Germany) and the Ecole Polytechnique, Palaiseau (France). Afterwards Ralf Wehrspohn worked at Philips Research Laboratories in Redhill (England) before he was appointed Professor for Experimental Physics at the University of Paderborn. In 2003 he received the Heinz-Maier-Leibnitz Price from the German Research Association (DFG) and the TR100 young innovators award from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
