A respected equine vet and farrier have joined forces to produce this manual for trainee and working farriers. This fully updated new edition for 2022, starts with a brief history of farriery, then looks at the legalities of the job and how to control equines for trimming and shoeing. The authors describe the care and maintenance of the forge and farriery tools, as well as the anatomy and function of the horse, especially the lower limbs, the principles of foot balance, and the practice of shoeing. Shoe making, surgical shoes, lameness and shoeing are dealt with in detail, and the book is embellished with hundreds of specially taken photos, and explanatory line drawings.

Dr Chris Colles is a highly regarded equine veterinary surgeon. He has had numerous papers published in journal, contributed to several veterinary books and lectured to learned societies worldwide. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Worshipful Company of Farriers, an accolade rarely bestowed on those outside the farriery profession. Ron Ware is a Fellow of the Worshipful Company of Farriers. Well-respected in his field, he was consultant farrier to the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket and the Hong Kong Jockey Club. John Hayes is an Associate of the Worshipful Company of Farriers. When he left the Army in1999 he became a lecturer at Warwickshire College and eventual senior lecturer in farriery in 2014, where he has helped in the training of hundreds of apprentices.
