The material at hand about symbols and signs is complex. Part of it is contained in the third volume of “Man and His Signs.” It is not a continuous text but one that is connected to the pictures in order to explain them. The symbols correlate. There is a net that is difficult to comprehend in the form of a book. This map with rows of signs and captions arose in order to offer assistance to the constant wanderings of one’s thoughts. But the mind does not follow the lines; it jumps about according to a scheme that is different for every “reader.”
Der Schweizer Adrian Frutiger (geb. 24. März 1928 in Unterseen bei Interlaken) gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Typografen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Nach einer Schriftsetzerlehre und einer Ausbildung an der Kunstgewerbeschule Zürich arbeitete Frutiger zunächst als Graphiker und Illustrator. 1952 wurde er Mitarbeiter der Pariser Schriftgießerei Deberny & Peignot, 1962 gründet Frutiger sein eigenes Grafikatelier in Arceuil bei Paris. Mehrere Jahre lehrte er nebenberuflich an der École Estienne und der École Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs. Seit 1992 lebt er in Bremgarten bei Bern.
